DUBLIN BAY 21 FOOTERS - FIRST RACE TO CLONTARF IN OVER 40 YEARS

10th August 2024.

We had a really special start in Dun Laoghaire Harbour,  off the Bandstand on the East Pier, expertly organised by Jonathan O'Rourke, signal flags, Vhf communication and countdown; a wonderful spectacle for people on the East Pier.

Start was at approx. 12.20
Course: Salthill starboard, New Ross port, Nav 4 starboard, Nav 3 port, finish North Bank lighthouse/flagship.
Wind: W 10/12knots. H.W. 16.00 hrs.  In view of weather forecast, all boats were reefed.

Estelle took the most windward position and unfortunately ran out of wind in the shadow of cruise liner moored on the Carlisle pier. Garavogue took the  side nearest the bandstand and had the best start and lead out of the harbour ahead of Geraldine closely followed by Naneen and Estelle.

At Salthill Mark, Garavogue had a good  lead followed by Estelle, Naneen and Geraldine. The downwind leg to New Ross was eventful with Garavogue taking a slightly lower line and Naneen a good bit higher (and more accurate) line. Garavogue mistook the marks and tacked around Asgard. This allowed Estelle to take the lead. At New Ross, Estelle rounded first followed by Geraldine with Naneen very close then Garavogue.

We had a short beat to Nav 4 (red) left to Starboard and across the channel to round Nav 3 to Port. We then hardened in to start the long beat to the finish. The Helms obviously thought the crew hadn’t done enough to earn their brack so proceeded to have as many tacks as possible to get to the finish. The positions changed repeatedly with the tidal and wind effects on each tack.  At this stage, we were amongst the Howth 17s which required some avoidance or additional tacks - heavy strain on crew!

Geraldine took the lead on the final leg from the North Bull Lighthouse to the finish followed closely by Garavogue, and Estelle and Naneen.
Result:  Geraladine (Mike Reid). Garavogue (John Leahy). Estelle (Rupert Bowen). Naneen (Fionan de Barra)

All boats picked up Club Moorings although Geraldine at first found the bottom resulting in two odd tacks before she was securely moored.
All crews, totalling 22 persons, were ferried ashore for legendary hospitality and brack  in CY&BC shared with crews of the Howth 17s.

Prize giving was at 4:00 and the winning crew were presented with very nice red wine glasses.
